The Senior Scientist for Artificial Intelligence is in the Information Technology Division, Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Washington, DC. This position has major implications for the development of warfighting technology for the Department of Navy (DON), and Department of War (DoW). The role of the senior scientist is to provide vision and direction toward the research, development, and application of artificial intelligence technologies and other advanced computational techniques which enable cyber and cyber-physical systems to perform increasingly complex reasoning, planning, and decision-making tasks. The position involves technical direction, but not administrative supervision, of organizational components with distinct technical competencies, leading to a functional and multidisciplinary capability for NRL's overall program.
Duties include:
- Researches, plans, and influences the direction of science & technology programs in support of NRL, DON and DoW, to include acting as the Principal Investigator on projects. As PI, collaborates with internal and external researchers, builds teams and oversees interdisciplinary research in support of Artificial Intelligence.
- Formulates research proposals, solicits funding for research proposals, and reports the progress of the projects to sponsors and supervisors.
- Makes recommendations that will create precedents and guide DON/DoW and other organizations on programs of major significance.
- Disseminates scientific results.
- Presents scientific results to peers, professional audiences at national and international conferences, and funding agencies.
- As a recognized world-leading expert, serves as a consultant in artificial intelligence technology and is solicited to provide assessments and evaluations for specific military systems and applications.

Salary range: $186,207 - $228,000

1. Thorough knowledge of artificial intelligence systems and techniques, to include search and pattern recognition, knowledge representation, natural language processing, computer vision, applied cognition, intelligent agents, machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, reinforcement learning, transformer models, and generative artificial intelligence applications.
2. Demonstrated ability to conceive, plan, coordinate and lead complex, multidisciplinary research projects in areas of competence and to obtain research support from funding agencies through research proposals in these areas.
3. Ability to provide subject matter expertise as a senior advisor to U.S. Navy, DoW, other government and international partners.
