Research Faculty I, 12 Month Salaried - Quench and Instrument Scientist (NHMFL)
Research Faculty I, 12 Month Salaried - Quench and Instrument Scientist (NHMFL)
Description
Department
Magnet Science and Technology division at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
Responsibilities
The Magnet Science and Technology Division of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is seeking an exceptional individual for a Research Faculty position for instrumentation and system analysis. The primary responsibility will be development of systems (including both hardware and software) to detect quench of superconducting magnets and discharge the stored energy of those magnets (up to 50 MJ) quickly, safely, and in a reliable and cost-effective manner. Additionally, this includes the development of a high-performance power supply system for supplying current to such large-scale superconducting magnets, its integration with the existing power system, and the development of a control system.
Specific targets as outlined in our strategic plan are a 40 T all-superconducting magnet system and high-field HTS inserts up to 60 T. Responsibilities include securing external funding through competitive grants and industry partnerships, and providing effective mentorship to students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career staff involved in the program's research activities.
The position will play a leading role in the development of next-generation high-field magnet systems. Presenting results in international conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals is expected. Preparation of reports and technical papers is required. Some travel may be required.
Qualifications
Qualifications include a Ph.D. or equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics, or equivalent qualifications based on professional experience with a demonstrated record of achievement in research.
Experience is required in LabVIEW with knowledge of the general properties and issues of low and high temperature superconductors. This also includes expertise in electrical engineering, power system simulation, circuit design, and PCB design.
A background in magnet technology, superconductivity, and/or cryogenics is required.
Preferred Qualifications
We are seeking candidates who are highly motivated and eager to work flexibly and creatively in a cross-disciplinary team environment.
The candidate should have demonstrated success in either developing and operation of instrumentation systems and quench detection and protection systems.
Very good communications skills and the ability to interact constructively with physicists, engineers, designers, technicians and other lab personnel are essential.
