Job Description To assist Licensed Rehabilitators in the care and maintenance of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife patients.
Training will involve all phases of the rehabilitation process with a focus on animal husbandry. Please note that this is an introductory experience and the primary training will include proper wildlife diets/nutrition, cage set up, enrichment, natural behavior/histories, cage cleaning, capture and restraint techniques, natural habitat, record keeping, and animal observational skills. As time allows, interns will explore some basic medical techniques but, this is not the primary focus.
Requirements
Expectations/Requirements Interns must have the ability to work and train volunteers in a dynamic and ever-changing setting that is quite fast paced and, at times, emotionally challenging. Applicants should have a general understanding of mammalian and avian anatomy and physiology. A general working knowledge of NW wildlife species including identification and associated natural histories is preferred. Interns will be expected to engage in all phases of the rehab process from food preparation to evaluation of patients for release. Two years of college level studies in the natural sciences is preferred. Must be able to lift (up to 40 lbs.), bend, reach, and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions. Work is strenuous.
Interns work 8 hours a day. We are open 7 days a week. Interns are scheduled 5 consecutive days (with 2 days off each week, not weekends) Interns must provide their own transportation to our facility Minimum age requirement 18 All applicants must commit to a 12 week internship.
