Description

Job Summary:

The position is for a research scientist (postdoctoral or other) to carry out chemical research with a focus on developing a miniature mass spectrometer for atmospheric monitoring. The research scientist will also assist in managing Dr. Mac Gilliland’s research laboratory including training of undergraduate researchers in data analysis, basic laboratory techniques, and mass spectrometry instrumentation. The position is full-time for one year, renewable for a second year.

Job Description:

The primary functions of the job will be to:

1.    Conduct research to develop a high pressure miniature mass spectrometry platform for analysis of volatile organic compounds
2.    Present findings to researchers and the public as needed
3.    Assist in managing the research laboratory and training undergraduate researchers as needed
4.    Make purchases for the laboratory
5.    Other duties as assigned



Requirements

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in analytical chemistry OR Master’s degree in chemistry plus 1-year experience with physical or analytical chemistry instrumentation

  • Demonstrated understanding of mass spectrometry

  • Proficient in office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Demonstration of an ability to present scientific research to a broad audience

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficient in mass spectrometry instrumentation, especially ion trapping instruments and/or photoionization

  • Experience with LabView and Igor Pro or Origin

  • Experience with 3-D design and manufacturing (machining and 3D printing)

  • Experience working with and training undergraduate research students
