Description

The applicant must meet the following minimal qualifications:

The Department of General Services, Division of Consolidated Laboratories (DCLS) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a bioterrorism/emergency response team Scientist in the Molecular Detection and Characterization (MDC) laboratory. The selected candidate will be trained to perform testing in biosafety level three (BSL3) laboratories to execute a wide variety of molecular biology methodologies for the rapid identification, characterization, and typing of bioterrorism-threat (BT) agents and emerging, highly infectious pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and Ebola virus from human, animal, and environmental sample types. Testing methodologies include but are not limited to nucleic acid isolation and standard and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. In addition, duties will also include performing immunoassays, conventional microbiological methods for bacterial identification, assisting with the development and validation of new methods, performing QA/QC procedures, maintaining accurate records, and maintenance of equipment.


This employee will be required to support the detection of BT agents and emerging pathogens and work a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule as part of the DCLS bioterrorism/emergency response team.



The duties of this position will require the handling and testing of select agents and toxins regulated by the Federal Select Agent Program and the selected candidate must pass a background security clearance and receive approval from the Federal Select Agent Program.



Weekend and after-hours work will be required as needed.


This is a full-time restricted position funded by a federal grant and includes state benefits.



Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity testing laboratory as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of operating and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of QA and QC procedures and how to properly document and interpret QC data.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience performing high complexity, high volume Polymerase Chain Reaction (Standard and Real-Time) testing.
  • Knowledge and experience with complex computer interfaced instrumentation and computerized laboratory information management systems; spreadsheets, MS Office products, and laboratory software programs.
  • Experience in Molecular Biology testing.
  • Experience working in a biosafety level three environment.
  • Experience with automated nucleic acid extraction instrumentation.
  • Experience performing immunoassays.
  • Experience performing conventional microbiological methods.
  • Experience with the development and validation of new methods.

Blood-borne pathogen training will be provided by the employer.

In order to comply with OSHA blood-borne pathogen requirements, DCLS offers the Hepatitis B vaccine.

Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment laboratory work is necessary for this position. The OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard is required which involves passing a respiratory physical prior to working in a BSL-3 laboratory. The respiratory physical will be provided by the employer.

DCLS employees are designated as essential personnel. This designation requires DCLS employees to report to the workplace or at an assigned remote location during state authorized closings or delays (i.e., weather-related closures/delays, holidays, etc.), unless otherwise instructed by management.
