The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Position Summary
This position is expected to conduct high level research in the area of molecular environmental toxicology, which includes combining cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry and animal models of human disease. This individual will be working under the guidance of Dr. John Pierce Wise, Sr. in the Wise Laboratory of Environmental and Genetic Toxicology in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the College of Veterinary Medicine. This individual's primary role is to drive scientific progress to define the key molecular mechanisms for how metals induce chromosome instability in humans, experimental animals and wildlife. The individual hired will manage and carry out research assignments for multifaceted research projects in cooperation with the Wise Laboratory team and perform or facilitate the performance of independent, complex and sophisticated laboratory experiments. These efforts will include: 1) Designing, developing, and modifying scientific/laboratory protocols and procedures; 2) Overseeing the use and availability of equipment, supplies, and specialized work areas; 3) Drafting written reports for inclusion in Dr. Wise's grant proposals and drafting papers or portions of papers for publication. The individual will submit grants as the coprincipal or principal investigator and participate in teaching, which may consist of lectures in courses or mentoring and training students in the laboratory.
The individual will communicate regularly with Dr. Wise and share management regarding critical activities of laboratory personnel including experimental record keeping, rigorous and safe laboratory practices, and quality and accuracy of oral and written scientific presentations of laboratory staff. Collaborate in the research and administrative responsibilities associated with the scientific projects. Help to make the laboratory a professional and generally collegial, safe, and productive work environment. The individual will help strengthen the overall reputation of the Laboratory via significant scholarly activities such as publications in refereed journals and presentations at meetings. They will develop national and international recognition for themselves and help maintain the Wise Laboratory's strong national and international reputation.
